Consulting

Projects

*    JUMBO Supermarket (Luanda, Angola)

This consulting project started in 1988 and it was our first experience in Angola. The supermarket that previously belonged to the Portuguese group Pão de Açúcar, was run by a state company named Angoy Francas, but the Ministry of Commerce wanted to reestructure and modernize store operations, since it was badly managed at that time due to lack of experience of management and poor infrastructure.

A team comprising 28 people was set up, most of them coming from the ranks of Disco Trading, the international trading company arm of the supermaket chain by the same name in Rio de Janeiro. This team assumed management of JUMBO, hand in hand with the Angolan team of workers. In the background of the project there was always the concern for know-how transfer, that is, while taking care of the restructuring job, the team would train the local human resources both in theory and practice.

Control worksheets (stock, accounting, sales, cash flow, losses, etc) were set up. Personnel was matched to actual needs, a new organogram was desinged and employees in all levels were trained, both in class room and on the job, seeking improvement in efficiency and better customer service.

Data processing and automation was inserted in an unimagineable manner at those times (in Angola): merchandises were coded and a computer network using POS equipment substituted the cash registers.

The contract lasted about three years. It was a real challenge in those times and a successful experience that gave us quite a motivation to keep working with the Angolan market.

*    Center for Professional Training of Cabinda (Cabinda, Angola)

The set up of a center for training industrial labor was a natural, complementary development to the previously built training facility for the commerce professions. The project conception included the design of the building, its actual construction, the set up of the working places and the supply of machinery and tools for the various professions.

The "Centro de Formação Profissional de Cabinda" (CFPC) consists of two classrooms for theoretical training, five workshops (ironworks, electricity, refrigeration - air conditionning, refrigerators, building construction - masonry and plumbing), one computerized drawing (CAD) classroom, plus one library, one auditorium, administrative areas, kitchen and a canteen.

*    Shop TV, Lda. (Luanda, Angola)

Shop TV was an Angolan sales TV business. It was the only company in this  market segment and started operations in November of 2003. The company was conceived upon a similar experience in Brazil and operated within international standards for this type of business. However, given local market conditions, a few changes were necessary in order to adapt and avoid operational (ineficient delivering services) and financial difficulties (lack of credit cards)specific of the Angolan developing economy.
